Overview
Swargarohini Peak Expedition
Swargarohini meant as “Stairway to Heaven '' lies in the Saraswati range of Garhwal Himalayas in Uttarkashi district. The Swargarohini massif comprises four peaks and Swargarohini I is the highest among them. While it is not exceptionally tall by Himalayan standards, it has previously confounded expeditions from Canada, Sweden, Japan, and India. The peak wasn't scaled until 1990, when students in an advanced mountaineering course at the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering reached the summit. The peak has fascinated mountaineers through the ages and being moderately high at 6252m is considered one of the more difficult summits of Garhwal Himalayas. It has dangerous drops of thousands of meters, doesn’t have a direct line of approach, hanging glaciers and rock walls from all the sides. In 1993, a Swedish Expedition team made an undisputed summit from the south face. Therefore it requires technical expertise coupled with physical fitness to achieve this remarkable summit. The Swargarohini Peak expedition starts from Taluka and with few transit halts we reach Seema(2900m). Here we shift the loads and carry on trekking to Ruinsaratal(3900m) passing through regular intervals of snow and debris caused by regular avalanches. Read More
Further, we trek to reach the base camp located at (4300m). The Hindu epic Mahabharata plays a major role in giving its name Swargarohini. After the end of the battle between the Pandavas and the Kauravas, the Pandavas decided to hand over their kingdom of Hastinapur to prince Parikshit, the son of Arjuna. Towards the final section of the epic, it is said to be used by Yudhistira the eldest of the Pandavas and last one to survive the treacherous journey as a stairway to heaven. The legends and myths may vary from region to region but the Swargarohini peak expedition is one of the most challenging and remarkable feats one can endure in their search for greatness. If you wish to fulfill the goal of climbing one the mystical peaks of India, Himalayan Adventure Trips is ready to help and support you in your adventure journey.

Itinerary of Expedition
Our first stop for the expedition is going to be the capital city of India, New Delhi. Our major objective here will be to stop at the Indian Mountaineering Foundation(IMF) to meet with our Liaison officer and get briefing and approval from the esteemed officers of IMF. After which we have the latter part of the day to enjoy the capital. We will meet again at 9 pm to board our bus for Dehradun. Overnight journey by bus/vehicle to Dehradun
We will reach Dehradun early in the morning and from there we will start our mountainous ride to the quaint village Sankri. Till a few years back Sankri was unknown to tourists and only a few tourists would seldom visit, but now Sankri is the most famous destination for treks in Uttarakhand. Our journey to Sankri will take us through the beautiful hill station established during the British raj in India and still holds a marvelous vibe to attract tourists from years and years on. We will follow the path of the Yamuna for a fair distance and then change our route towards its tributary the river Tons. At Netwad village we will enter Govind Pashu Vihar National Park & Sanctuary. Here, our permits will be checked for the first time and we will have to show all details to the forest ranger so that he can issue an approval for the Expedition. We will reach Sankri in the afternoon where we will check into our Homestay/Guest house. Any kind of rental equipment will be distributed in the evening. Overnight stay in Homestay/Guest House in Sankri.
We will have a hot and nutritious breakfast at our homestay/guest house in Sankri and then load our baggage and equipment on top of the vehicles. We will make a one hour trip by road to Taluka village which is just 12 kms from Sankri. The road ends at Taluka so we will now continue our journey on foot. Our equipment and other necessities will be carried by mules to a certain point and then onwards we will only have the option of hiring porters or carrying the load ourselves. The trail to Seema will take us along Supin river, ascending and descending as we further go up the valley. We will spot some villages which are absolutely disconnected by road and can be only accessed through mountainous trails. These namely Dhatmeer, Gangadh and Osla. We will camp at Seema which is on the opposite hill to Osla village. Overnight stay in tents at Seema.
The trek to our next campsite Ruinsara Lake will start early in the morning as the trail is long and we never know what kind of obstacles may lay ahead. We will make our way through the thick thick jungles of pine and oak and then ascend steeply into an open grassland which the people of Uttarakhand call Bugyal. From the Bugyal we descend down towards Supin river and cross the river using a wooden bridge. The trail from then onwards becomes gradual till we reach Mori waterfalls, a beautiful location on the trail which is used as a campsite by trekkers going to cross Bali pass. From there we climb steeply through another patch of forest area. As the route becomes more gradual we enter into a forest of Himalayan Birch which is locally called Bhojpatra. The paper-like material which can be peeled from the bark of the tree is said to have been used as paper to write the ancient epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata. From the birch forest it's just a short trek to Ruinsara lake. After reaching the campsite immerse yourself in the awe inspiring beauty of the surrounding peaks. Overnight stay in tents at Ruinsara Lake campsite.
As we make our way to Kyarkoti after having our breakfast we will get to see the marvelous peaks, Kalanag and Bandarpoonch. We will be taking goat trails mostly so carefully watch your step while we ascend on these thin trails. We will encounter a small waterfall in between where we can fill our bottles and refresh ourselves with the cool and tantalizing flowing water. After this brief stop we will continue our march towards Kyarkoti. The last section of today’s trek takes us through some tricky water crossings over Supin river till we reach the beautiful slopes at Kyarkoti. We will pitch our campsite and have the rest of the evening for leisure. Overnight stay in tents at Kyarkoti.
We should reserve a day before the start of the expedition so that our bodies can better prepare for what is to come ahead. Kyarkoti is the last point till where the mules can help us in our logistical transportation, so, from here onwards we will be carrying our own load and back. This is the very reason we call this our base camp as we can now navigate ahead on our own. We will start our morning with some breathing exercises and light warm up and then we will proceed with the day. Some gain is in order, after which we will move on to distribution of equipment and ration which we need to take ahead. Keep the day light and easy. Overnight stay in tents at Kyarkoti Base camp.
Kyarkoti is the last location till where our mules can reach, so from here onwards everything that can be carried is on the backs of humans. We will distribute all the equipment and ration that has to be taken to the next campsite and pack it in our bags quickly. The initial part of our trek we ascend to a point on the slopes where we can find a strategic point to descend down towards the river bed where we will jump over rocks and cross over. After that it's all uphill climbing until we reach the base camp. There is another tricky portion in between where we might need to cross from a spur to a landslide and scree shoot area. Another steep uphill climb and we will reach the Base Camp. We set up our base camp and keep our load that we have carried and then depart back for Kyarkoti. Overnight stay in tents at Kyarkoti.
We provide a tentative itinerary of the expedition days as the himalayan terrain is absolutely unpredictable so we might have to alter the days in between for a chance to have a successful summit of Swargarohini I.
We will take the route we took the previous day to base camp and carry any other supplies that we might require for our expedition. Establish Base Camp and adorn Kalanag and Bandarpoonch in close range. Overnight stay in tents at Advance Base Camp.
At ABC we will train, ice craft some of the techniques on Bandar punch glacier to get familiar with upcoming hardships. We will get prepared for the route opening and fixing adequate ropes for safe climb. Soon we head on forward to open the route on a small glacial slope and then on a snowfield pitching sufficient equipment on difficult rock slants. Later in the afternoon we retrace back to the ABC and relax in our tents.
Next day we will shift to Camp I located somewhere above the rock wall. We move briskly to the ice slope where ropes have been fixed earlier and negotiate it easily towards the snowfield. In between a patch of avalanche prone slopes are carefully traversed as many of the climbers had lost their lives on these unpredictable ascends. The prefixing of ropes en route show no such difficulty but the danger of slipping on mixed slopes of 40-60 degrees causes some problems. Soon we will reach the base of the rocky slope and fix some rope and climb this section with the help of jumar. As this rocky col is climbed it offers an excellent view of surroundings: a rocky ridge and two steep ice walls and snowy tops along with Kalanag Peak in the Bandar punch massif. Read More
On the subsequent day our reconnaissance team will move forward while the rest of the team keeps Camp 1 functioning so that the lead team can successfully open the route to the summit camp and fix the ropes for the majority of the climb on the rocky terrain of the summit attempt.
On the southern side of a very steep fall of 20-25m height and a bifurcation of glacier going and joining northern slopes of the Swargarohini group. We will fix our summit camp at the base of the peak and wait for the night.
In the middle of the night we make our ascent on snowy slopes which would be crunchy and hard in early hours. The snow plateaus will come and go one after the other restricting one by the summit views. These humps are never ending and continue obstructing the climb on the dangerous slopes. We will follow the northern edge of the ridge over heavily corniced humps carefully to avoid any steep fall. After the fourth hump we could have the first glimpse of the summit but still it is a few meters far. A bergschrund below the summit has to be crossed through a narrow gap to the top. The top of the peak is corniced and is dangerous if any mistake has been made. We will ascend prudently on the top of the peak and rest a bit to catch a glimpse of the beauty of Saraswati ranges and offer a Puja. We will spend some quality time and return safely to Camp I or to ABC. The only real problem on the way back is the snow conditions which in the afternoon may be slushy and slippery. Along with the risk of avalanches en route may cause adversities. Nevertheless we will descend carefully retrieving all fixed ropes, pitons and snow stakes back to the summit camp. Here we will wind up the campsite and descend to ABC, passing through avalanche prone slopes. By the evening we will reach the ABC and rest inside our tents rejoicing over a hot cup of tea.
We keep two buffer days in between in case our movement is restricted by any kind of bad weather or other natural factors.
Next day trace back the trails to the lower camps and to the last road head.
We will retrace our steps after the success of our marvelous expedition of the mythical and marvelous Swargarohini I. We will pack up all our equipment leaving nothing behind. At the base camp at Kyarkoti we will get logistical assistance from our faithful mules. The help of offloading some of our equipment after the tremendous effort that we have just put in. Overnight stay in tents at Ruinsara Lake campsite.
We will take the same route back to Seema where we will establish our campsite for the night to rest after the hectic efforts that we have made.
Today we will make our last journey on foot as we approach civilization. We will cross all the known routes back to Taluka. At Taluka we will board vehicles which will transport both our equipment and us back to our homestay/guest house at Sankri. We can finally enjoy the luxury of a hot bath and a warm bed at our homestay/guest house at Sankri.
Today we will make our departure for Dehradun and from there we shall bid farewell until our next adventurous journey.

➽ Preparation for Expedition
During the wonderful Himalayan trek, mind, body, and spirit must all be overcome, as you well know. Precise preparation, with appropriate pliability of observing and confronting circumstances, is essential. Due to the difficulty and unpredictability of expeditions, participation is limited to those who have completed trekking at altitudes of at least 4,500 metres at least four to five times or have finished a Basic Mountaineering course.
The following are some considerations for the Swargarohini Peak Expedition:
⦿ Physically –
An Expedition requires a lot of physical endurance, therefore you should start working out a month before signing up for a programme. Strengthen your legs by jogging and working out regularly to increase your stamina. To better acclimatise to the environment and increase your resilience on the walk, you should give up smoking and undertake breathing exercises twice a day. Participate wholeheartedly in sports, Yoga, and other cardiovascular activities. Sometimes you have to climb for 20 hours straight, therefore you need to be ready to push yourself to the maximum, which is only possible with well-defined pre- and post-climb training.
⦿ Mentally –
As essential as physical training is for an Expedition, so too is mental preparation. Relax, enjoy your regular activities, and take care of yourself before embarking on an Adventure. Don't put yourself through mental anguish by making guesses or planning ahead for the Expedition. Get together with your closest pals to rejuvenate and refocus your thinking. After you join the March and meet the rest of the pack, you will find encouragement and excitement, proving that your pre-expedition preconceptions were unfounded. As you endure the hardships of the journey, both your mental and physical toughness will increase. Hence, as you make your way up to each campground, it's a good idea to pay attention to different sections of the body and actively relax them. Focus on the path or whatever perilous terrain you must carefully handle when climbing, and attempt to relax your body. Try out a few new walking techniques to add some fun to your commute that has nothing to do with getting anywhere. The best way to keep one's mind in good shape when travelling is to relax and enjoy the ride.
⦿ Technically –
Choose the right size of trekking or climbing shoes and walk with it, from a technical standpoint. Fill a 60-liter container. Carry as much as you can in your rucksack on a regular basis to become accustomed to walking lengthy distances with it. You should equip yourself with a trekking pole, water bottle, warm socks, thermals, fleece, feather jackets, cap, trousers, poncho, flip flops, and any necessary equipment like a power bank and camera (DSLR or digital camera). Get a sling and use it to perfect the primary knots you'll need for the ascent.
The rewards of a successful mountain ascent are well worth the effort required to reach the top, which may be as daunting as the mountain itself. The Himalayan Adventure Trips Expedition to Mighty Mountain Swargarohini awaits your honest participation.

Climbing Hanuman Tibba in August 2019 with Good Company
In the company of Hat, Sameer, Arun, and I climbed to the summit of Hanuman Tibba (at an altitude of 5932 metres). With Shera at the helm as the chief guide, along come Vishal, Panna, and Jaggi, who work together to form a tight-knit, effective, and amiable unit. The majority of our time was spent in a high-quality 4-person tent; the given gear was not brand new but adequate, with the exception of a few small difficulties with one of the sleeping bags. Both the meal and the hot beverages were delicious. Manu was simple to get in touch with before to our adventure, and he answered all of our questions (there weren't many) thoroughly. Basically, my time spent on adventure with Himalayan Adventure Trips was both personally rewarding and professionally enriching.
