Overview

Dzo Jongo East Peak Expedition

Compared to its more acclaimed twin in Markha Valley, Dzo Jongo East is a Lesser known peak situated in Ladakh UT. It is a perfect peak above 6000 meters which can be scaled by tough and young mountaineers with some tough and might along with good technical know-how and experience. The enduring journey to the top of the mountain begins from Leh which is one of the most renowned adventure hubs in India. From Leh we take a 2 hour drive to the quaint little village named Lato which falls on the Leh-Manali highway. Initially the route leads on to thin trails with loose rocks and finally to the snow patches. The route passes through one of the harshest and arid natural landscapes where one has to stay hydrated all the time for optimal body performance. There are several crystal clear streams enroute which are ready to be drunk without any sort of hesitation. The key thing to summit the Dzo jongo East is to acclimatize properly. We will spend adequate time getting used to the atmosphere. Subsequently a summit attempt will be made as per the weather conditions. As it is a technical peak the most technical mountaineers from the team are first sent onto the slopes to climb and fix ropes for the whole team to follow behind and make it to the summit. As we start climbing the mountain sheer uphill leaves one struggling yet the extensive panorama keeps rejuvenating one's strength. The gradient turns sharper as we climb on the summit shoulder at least for some time requiring crampons for the extra safety. The summit ridge is mostly of rocky properties which consists of less or no snow patches on this last section of setting acme. On the summit at 6280m one can see the giant peaks of Karakoram Range towering above 8000m the distant Western Himalayan Peaks, Zanskar Range in the south, Changthang mountains to the east. If you wish to embark on this less visited technical peak, then Himalayan Adventure Trips is ready to help and support you in your adventure journey.

Itinerary of Expedition

After reaching Leh, reach the Hotel/Guest House assigned to you by Himalayan Adventure Trips. The information will be shared prior to the start of your Expedition. Check into your rooms at the Hotel/Guest House take some time to freshen up after your journey as we have a briefing session scheduled post lunch time. During the briefing session you will be briefed about all necessary information regarding mountain mannerisms, acclimatization and the administrative formalities that we will have to follow for Dzo Jongo East Expedition. Evening time is left for leisure activities like taking a stroll to Leh Main Market to stock up on some last minute supplies. Overnight stay in Hotel/Guest House in Leh.

We will start early in the morning on this day so have a light breakfast and be ready for our acclimatization walk to Shanti Stupa. This helps us again gain 100 meters of altitude which helps our body acclimate to not just the high altitude but also the dry and desolate climate of the Ladakh region. After our acclimatization walk we will proceed with our Administrative formalities. Once we are done, we have the rest of the day off to explore the local culture and locations of Leh. Overnight stay in Hotel/Guest House in Leh.

After having breakfast we will check out of our rooms and board the vehicles which will take us to Lato, which is going to be our next base. The drive from Leh to Lato takes about 2 hours to reach as we proceed towards the Leh-Manali highway. Enroute we will pass popular sightseeing spots like Shey palace and Thiksey monastery. From Upshi the road diverts and takes us to Lato. On reaching our destination we will set camp at Lato which is a small village with just a few shops and homestays. You will even get to see many Buddists relics as Ladakhi culture has a great influence from Tibet. Overnight stay in tents in Lato.

Today is the day when we begin our journey on foot. Waking up to the colorful mountains in the surrounding area of Lato is absolutely beautiful to behold. We will have breakfast at our campsite then proceed for our trek. Our trail for the day is mostly an uphill climb in the arid landscape of Ladakh with rocks of different colors ranging from white and gray to a mix of pink, purple and orange. We will reach Shiul Sumdo in the after reaching for 5-6 hours depending upon our pace. On reaching the campsite we will be welcomed with some tea and snacks to raise our energy and spirit after a long day of trekking. Overnight stay in tents at Shiul Sumdo

In the morning, energize yourself by doing some warm up and breathing exercises to start the day on a positive note and stay in high spirit even in difficult high altitude conditions. Soon we will have our breakfast and depart on a long day of trekking in the Ladakh region. The highlight of today’s trail is going to be climbing upto Shiul pass with steep inclination. As we climb through the rocky terrain we acclimatize better. After the downward trail from Shiul pass, the gradient becomes more gradual and easier to walk on. We will trek for about 5 hours taking adequate breaks in between to have our packed lunch and refill our bottles with crystal clear spring water. Chaksung is going to be our next camp where we will pitch our tents and spend the night.

After our breakfast at the campsite we will take our packed lunch and depart for our upward climb to Chak pass. Ladakh is known for its high altitude passes and this expedition takes us through two of them. The long and arduous climb and then a steep descent to constantly challenge us through the course of the trail. We will be reaching the base camp today and come face to face with the mighty Dzo Jongo East. Overnight stay in tents at the Base Camp.

To reach the summit we must know a few techniques to ascend and descend on steep snowy terrains of Dzo Jongo. Along with ascending and descending techniques we also practice how to march while we are roped up together as a team, in which the technique of self arrest plays a vital role while on mountaineering expeditions. As the team  practices for the summit push, the lead climbers from the team open the routes and fix the ropes on which we will fix our Jumars and climb to the summit. We will have an early lunch dinner and retire as the summit attempt will begin at midnight.

The day of reckoning has finally arrived. We have been making preparations for this day from the moment we decided to go on this expedition and after many days of trekking and acclimating to the rising altitude, we will begin our climb to the summit. The summit attempt is a rigorous activity and requires a lot of stamina and endurance. For this, we will have a quick breakfast with some black coffee for instant energy and boost. At 00:00 hours sharp we will depart from our campsite. The route needs to be carefully negotiated so the lead climbers lead the way as they have opened the route and fixed the ropes a day before. We will be climbing 70 degree walls and evading crevasses while walking on the glaciers. From the shoulder our route becomes a mix of rock and ice making this portion tricky and even more technical. On reaching the summit we will have a grand view of the Zanskar, Karakoram and the Himalayan ranges. After spending some time on the summit and clicking photographs to take back as memories we will start our descent back to the base camp. Celebrations are in order after a marvelous summit of Dzo Jongo East. Overnight stay in tents at the base camp.

Today we take a different route down to Leh, through Kongmaru La pass which lies at an altitude of 5,236M. We start early since there is a lot of ground to cover before we reach the road head from where we will get our drive to Leh. The morning is spent in wrapping up our campsite and heading back down. From Nimaling, we start to climb the mountain on the opposite side. The climb up to Kongmaru La pass is a few patches of steep incline between long distances of flat land rich in pikas and marmots. From the pass, it is only descent on a narrow trail, through gorges and water crossings with the valley appearing and disappearing on every turn. The terrain is interesting in its colors with rocks across the color palette, to geological formations with massive walls of rocks standing vertically on either side of you and the gush of water filling up these narrow passageways to the strangest and most interesting fauna you will ever see. From the top of the pass its another 4 hour hike down to Chokdo, which is the road head in this area. After reaching Chokdo we will board our vehicles which will drop us back to civilization in Leh. Overnight stay in Guest House in Leh.

We will be retracing back our footsteps back to Lato, crossing the two high altitude passes that we took to reach the base camp. After reaching Lato we will reach Leh via road. Enjoy the comforts of bed and a warm shower after spending so many days in the great outdoors. Overnight stay in a Hotel/Guest house in Leh.

➽ Preparation for Expedition

As you well know, the great Himalayan expedition is one that requires careful preparation, a strategy that allows for enough flexibility to adapt to whatever challenges may arise.

Therefore, here are some things to consider before setting out on your Dzo Jongo East Peak Expedition:

⦿ Physically – You should start working out at least a month before signing up for a program if you want to be physically prepared for the rigours of a journey. Strengthen your legs by jogging and working out regularly to increase your stamina. To better acclimatise to the environment and increase your resilience on the walk, you should give up smoking and undertake breathing exercises twice a day. Engage in vigorous physical activity, such as playing sports, doing Yoga, or running.

⦿ Mentally –

Getting in shape physically is essential, but mental preparation is just as crucial for a successful walk. Take time to enjoy your regular activities, maintain a healthy diet and sleep schedule, and unwind before embarking on a hike. Predictions regarding the journey should not cause mental worry. Spend time with your closest pals to recharge your batteries and renew your spirit. Pre-trek preconceptions are unwarranted since the first contact with the other trekkers is certain to be a source of inspiration and energy. Conditions during the walk will contribute to the increase in mental readiness. The mental repercussions of physical disadvantages will not be ignored. So, when you hike, pay attention to different regions of your body and purposefully relax them. If you want to enjoy your hike, you should learn to loosen up a little, particularly in the hips. Think about your descent as a simple dance, and enjoy the natural rhythms that the path and your body can discover together gradually, whether you're on a flowing downhill route or a frightening slope. Try out a few new walking techniques to add some fun to your commute without worrying about getting somewhere in particular. Maintaining mental fitness mostly requires a willingness to relax and take in the journey, rather than subjecting oneself to undue stress.

➽ How to Reach

The best mode of transportation is airplanes:

The only way to get to Ladakh is by flight after the roads to the high passes are blocked for the winter season due to snow. The Manali-Leh and Srinagar-Leh roads are often shut by October-November and November-December, respectively. Throughout the winter, a number of airlines provide frequent flights to Leh. The major goal is Delhi. From Delhi to Leh, there is one flight every day. All three airlines provide flights between New Delhi and Leh: Jet Airways, Air India, and Go Air.

Because rates have a tendency to increase after a given length of time, reservations should be made well in advance.

Everything about our visit to Prashar lake was better than we could have imagined. From our initial contact with Himalayan Adventure Trips, we felt their genuine interest in learning about our group's goals and expectations, and our travels with them reinforced at every turn that they not only understood our requirements but also have the acute skill and expertise to achieve them. Having already had such a wonderful experience with this firm, I will be promoting a trek to Prashar lake to all my friends who share my passion for hiking and will specifically recommend that they work with this outfit. Absolutely fantastic; I have nothing but praise for it.
