➽ Itinerary of Cycling Expedition

The cyclists will arrive in Dehradun in the morning and report to the designated lodging(this information will be shared prior to your arrival in Dehradun) where they will be greeted by a representative from Himalayan Adventure Trips. The initial part of the day will be spent completing administrative formalities like collection of registration form, medical form and undertaking. After which you will have your briefing session before moving on to allocation of cycles and the trial run. This will cover the major part of the day, after which, you are free to relax before the start of your cycling expedition. Overnight stay in a hotel in Dehradun.

In the morning we will have our flag off as the official beginning of the cycling expedition. The cyclists will begin their journey by cycling through the city of Dehradun and start their upward climb from Rajpur road in Dehradun. The winding road of the foothills of the Himalayas with lush green scenery is the best warm for what is to come ahead. Mussoorie road is always bustling with tourists so we will take a diversion just before entering Mussoorie and make our way to Landour, an area established by the British colonizers and is also the home to Ruskin Bond the famous child novelist. You can even spot many magnificent peaks such as Gangotri I, II, III, Chaukhamba Massif and Bhagirathi I and II. The last bit of cycling for the day is a mix of uphill and downhill when we enter Rohtuki valley, a hidden gem amidst the Garhwal Himalayas. We will set up camp for tonight in Rohtuki valley and spend the night in the tents.

The route for today is mainly uphill as we will gain altitude to reach Moriyana Top which is going to be our next halting point. The distance for cycling is considerably lesser than the other days of the cycling expedition. But the challenge of climbing to Moriyana Top is a great one and will test the endurance of each and every cyclist in the team. Overnight stay in a hotel at Moriyana.

The next stop on our cycling expedition will be in the hustling and bustling town of Uttarkashi. While pedaling down from Moriyana Top we will reach the banks of the river Bhagirathi, which is one of the two major rivers that make the holy river Ganga. Near Sarot Doman we will reach near the banks of Bhagirathi where the river is broad and mighty. The rest of the way to Uttarkashi is mostly gradual uphill cycling passing through various places like Dharasu Bend and other small villages of Uttarakhand while you pedal towards today’s destination. On reaching Uttarkashi you will be awed with the spiritual vibrance of the valley as many saints and holy men make their way to this location in search of liberation and enlightenment. Make your way to the designated lodging. The evening time is left for leisure to explore the township situated on the bank of the river Bhagirathi. Overnight stay in a hotel in Uttarkashi.

Wake up early in the morning to the fresh spiritual vibe of Uttarkashi and quickly get ready to depart for our day ahead. The distance to be covered will be long and hard with most of the route having a mixed uphill and downhill gradient which does not strain your body while cycling on long distances. And the greenery of the area provides us with ample oxygen to convert the food that we have eaten into energy. After leaving Uttarkashi we will cross various other villages like Gangori where the Assi Ganga and Bhagirathi converge and then moving on we reach Maneri, a location from where you can go towards Raithal which is the starting point of the famous Dayara Bugyal trek. From Gangnani, the route is mostly downhill and all cyclists can take a breather while cycling. This is very much required as the real climb will begin shortly, Harsil is a high altitude village which is situated at 9000 feet above sea level and the surrounding terrain gives you the feeling of entering the greater Himalayas. On reaching Harsil we will check into our lodging where we will spend the night.

The day has finally arrived that we cycle to the main destination of our cycling expedition which is Gangotri. A famous pilgrimage spot for Hindus all around the country and it also is the point of inception for the holy river Ganga. We will pedal down from Harsil and then start our steep ascent towards Gangotri. As you cycle through Gangotri national park, you will be blown away with the natural beauty of the surrounding area with the massive snow capped mountains of the Garhwal Himalayas overseeing our cycling expedition. The route to Gangotri might not be that long but the gradient makes it even more difficult to accomplish. Power through the last bit of the climb and reach the road end at Gangotri Dham. On reaching the destination you will be surprised at the amount of tourists who visit this area to get a Darshan of Ganga Maiya (Mother Ganga) in her infant stage. We will be staying in one of the many ashrams of Gangotri Dham to give you a perfect setting of the Hindu pilgrimage destination.

The cycling route then winds its way towards Nelong, a region that until recently remained shrouded in mystery due to its strategic importance. Nelong, now open to the public, is a historical treasure trove, boasting abandoned military structures against the jaw-dropping canvas of the Himalayan peaks. The ascent to Nelong is not for the faint of heart. The winding roads carve through rugged terrain, challenging both skill and endurance. However, with every switchback, the anticipation of what lies ahead builds. As the altitude increases, so does the grandeur of the landscape. Towering peaks, pristine valleys, and the crisp mountain air create an otherworldly ambiance that serves as a constant companion on the uphill battle. Descending from Nelong, the route leads to Harsil, an alpine haven that provides a perfect denouement to the cycling adventure. Harsil, with its lush meadows, coniferous forests, and the Bhagirathi River flowing gracefully, offers a serene contrast to the high-altitude drama of Nelong. The ride into Harsil is a symphony of natural beauty, with the surrounding peaks standing guard over the tranquil valley. After reaching Harsil we will check into our hotel where we will spend the night.

Today, we will say goodbye to the high altitude landscape of Harsil and retrace our steps back to Uttarkashi. Here we will conclude our cycling expedition and celebrate the completion of this marvelous endeavor with the whole team.

Post breakfast your expedition with Himalayan Adventure Trips comes to its climax where we say goodbye to each other with heavy hearts and promise to meet again in the future.

➽ Preparation for Cycling Expedition

You must be well prepared mentally, physically, and spiritually for the magnificent Himalayan expedition, as you know any high expedition requires careful preparation. So, here are a few things to keep in mind as you get ready for your cycling expedition:

⦿ Physically –

The physical demands of a bicycle tour need a month of training prior to embarking on any given riding excursion. Strengthen your legs to the proper level by regularly cycling 70-100 km and working out to increase your endurance. Mountain routes are steep and frequently followed by downhills since riding on plains is quite different from riding in the mountains. If you're used to biking in the mountains, 100 kilometres on the plains will seem like a breeze. Therefore, if you smoke, you should give it up and undertake breathing exercises twice a day to strengthen your lungs and help you acclimatise to the circumstances while remaining resilient on the journey. Get out and play, try some Yoga, or do anything else that gets your heart pumping.

⦿ Mentally –

As essential as physical training is for a cycling journey, so too is mental preparation. Enjoy your regular activities, maintain a healthy diet and sleep schedule, and unwind before embarking on a cycling adventure. Put your mind at ease by avoiding making any rash assumptions about the vacation. Meet together with your closest friends before setting off on your bike excursion to gain inspiration and de-stress before the journey. Your pre-trip preconceptions will prove to be unfounded once you join the group and discover the other cyclists. As the journey progresses, so will the traveler's mental readiness. There will also be mental repercussions from the physical difficulties. So, when you bike, pay attention to different areas of your body and purposefully relax them. One of the best ways to keep one's mind in good shape is to just take it easy and enjoy the journey.

⦿ Technically-

Get the right size cycling shoes and you'll be ready to ride for hours. You should equip yourself with a high-quality protective headgear, riding gloves, a watch (if you have one), elbow and knee pads, a puncture repair kit, LED lights, lubrication of any sort, a hydration bag, and spare brake and gear cables.

➽ Things to Carry

What kind of exciting journey can you expect to have while the Himalayas are all around you? Most of us probably picture going on a long hike or scaling a mountain. But a small bike adventure through the alleys of Naggar, Manali, is even more exciting. The Himalayan Adventure Trips crew gave me an unforgettable experience over the course of three days and two nights during my Navratri holidays. It was my first time doing anything like that, and I was blown away by the freedom of riding a bike around the city while taking in the majesty of the surrounding mountains. We also had a fantastic day at Jana Falls. The gorgeous hillstation of Manali is the perfect setting for a new riding journey, and learning about the local culture is essential. The efforts of the Himalayan Adventure Trips staff were commendable in every way. Feel free to go out into the unknown.
